East Village, St. Marks Place (by Robbie Chafitz)

Dźwięki klaksonów, rozbrzmiewająca muzyka, zapach świeżo upieczonej pizzy, moczu, marihuany, spalin, olei piżmowych i kwiatów wiśni.

Stromboli pizza
Lucy’s
Pyramid club
Horseshoe bar (7th and B)
Mogador Cafe
96 St Marks (Led zeppelin physical graffiti building)
Odessa diner
Moishe’s bakery
Gem Spa (egg creams)
Doc Holidays
Holiday Cocktail Lounge (but now updated)
Search and Destroy
Two Boots Pizza

Horns honking, music blaring, freshly baked pizza, urine, pot smoke, exhaust fumes, musk oils, cherry blossoms. . A homeless man pushes a duck down the street in a wheelchair. A babushka yells at spiked hair punks blasting the Clash on a boombox. A heroin dealer flirts with a lady cop. Lou Reed hails a cab. Somebody took the whole world, shook it up and then spilled it out onto St. Marks place.

Spring 1987. I am immigrant in a strange land, a land I always dreamed of becoming a resident of. Born in Washington D.C., I am a full blooded American but an American who aspires to be a New Yorker. And no other neighborhood screams New York more to me than the East Village.

I am standing at the intersection of St. Marks Place and First Avenue and the greatest show on earth unfolds before my eyes. No moment that passes will ever be duplicated again. I find myself the star of my own movie. An endless cast of supporting characters appear, as plot twists unfold against iconic backdrops and a city inspired soundtrack. The East Village is one of those unique places that make you feel like you have arrived, that you it’s been waiting for you and now you are truly “here.” And it is this feeling that inspires thousands of refugees like myself to make it their home.

I lived in this magical neighborhood on and off for nearly a decade. It is the sort of place where you can leave for just a week but when you return, it is not the same place as when you left. Sure most all of the buildings, shops and restaurants are exactly the same but the people who have passed through during this time have left their marks on the sidewalks, streets, benches, in the air. You can feel it. It is real.

When you walk down this street you are re-defining what the neighborhood is….You are adding your experience to the millions of others that have come here to find themselves, re-invent themselves, to disappear, or to be discovered. Punks, artists, anarchists, immigrants, rockers, convicts, runaways, the super-rich, the super poor, the lonely and those looking to join the never-ending party join you as you stroll down the sidewalk. And the moment you step foot here, you are one of them.

St marks places still around:
Stromboli pizza
Lucy’s
Pyramid club
Horseshoe bar (7th and B)
Mogador Cafe
96 St Marks (Led zeppelin physical graffiti building)
Odessa diner
Moishe’s bakery
Gem Spa (egg creams)
